Please be advised that starting the week of May 26, crews will begin construction of the new synthetic turf field at Blackburn Park (see Map).
The project is a collaboration between the City and the Shuswap Youth Soccer Association, with SYSA contributing funding toward the project. The new field will be marked to allow two smaller fields or one larger permitting various age groups to play. The synthetic turf will also allow an extension of the youth soccer season and allow higher level use in all weather conditions.
The work will involve removal of the soil embankment in the centre portion of Blackburn Park (the southern embankment will remain), placement and compaction of a granular base and drainage, and installation of the synthetic turf playing surface and fencing. The work will require excavation equipment and heavy trucks which will enter/exit to 5 Street SW.
Construction of the field is planned to start May 26th and is expected to be completed by mid-September. There will be a period of inactivity while the weight of the installed gravel is permitted to compress and settle the softer soils below the field.
During construction the City contractor, Lessard Excavating Ltd, will plan their work to limit interruption to park & trail use and minimize dust impacts, however construction noise is expected due to the nature of the work. The Contractor will adhere to all City bylaws and are planning to work between the hours of 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. We appreciate your cooperation and will attempt to minimize disruption while this important project is underway.
