The 2013 City of Salmon Arm calendar was sent out in the weekend paper.  I just wanted to let everyone know that the majority of pictures in the calendar were taken and submitted to the City by the Salmon Arm Secondary photography club.  So a special thank you from the City to the SAS students for the great pictures.

Lana Fitt from the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society, which is governed by a group of local business people, presented the EDS 2012 yearend report. The EDS had a busy 2012 as they interviewed businesses to see how they could best serve them and worked with the Industrial Park owners to a develop brochure with a map and business listing which will also translate into Industrial park signage. They worked with the Downtown College Campus committee to bring together a plan for a new college campus which was endorsed by the Okanagan College Board of Governors. They spent many hours working on developing their 5 year action plan. An executive summary of the plan will be posted on their website soon. Thank you to all our local business people who worked with EDS on this plan. We appreciate your willingness to take time away from your business to work on this for the city.

A presentation by Dan MacQuarrie on the Clean Air Initiative was postponed until the January 28, 2013 council meeting. Apparently, Mr. MacQuarrie was not feeling well yesterday. Get well soon, Dan and we will see you later this month.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Kevin Keane sent a letter to council and attended the council meeting to give us a heads up that the Summer Stomp may be held at the SA Fall Fair grounds this year. The reason for the heads up was to let us know of possible additional policing costs if this event takes place within the City boundaries.

Amyn Alibhai, owner of Zaitamyn Poultry farm at the west side of town requested that they be allowed to put a mobile home for additional farm help on their property. Mr. Alibhai gave a very interesting presentation on their family history and farming operation. Apparently they can have nearly 80,000 birds on site at a time. They have 27,000 caged laying hens, 15,000 free run laying hens and 30,000 chicks. This is intensive farming hence the need for additional farm help on site and therefore a second residence. After respectfully considering input from a number of agencies, Council decided to support the application.
At the Hearing last night council passed a setback variance permit that will allow a small subdivision in the Pheasant Heights area to go ahead.

Also, Council passed a variance request for a garage that was built just within the required property line setbacks. Due to the shorter length of the driveway near a corner with challenging site lines, Council requested a Hidden Driveway sign be erected at the owner’s expense.

Lastly, I want to thank the City’s public works crew for a great job keeping the roads clear during our recent heavy snow falls.
